The Iceman's Game Journal

After seeing Tim's Game Diary, I started this blog to give me some incentive to actually finish some of the 461+ video games I have (of which I have finished 41.) Hope it works.

Resident Evil 5--Racist?

Apparently some idiot...sorry, respected journalist (I love the fact that the site couldn't finish the title properly) is saying that RE5 is racist because in the trailer (posted below) has Chris Redfield killing a bunch of African-American zombies (or Le Plaga victims, but I will talk about that in the next post)  He also made it a point to mention that RE4 was racist because the game had Leon killing a bunch of Hispanic zombies.

I won't even get into the whole "It's a game" thing, but I would like to point out a couple of things.

1.) It is set in Africa.  what type of zeds would you expect to find there, Chinese?

2.) RE4 was set in a "European" village that was probably in Spain.  See previous point for the rest.

3.) Would it still be racist if the main character was black?

4.) It's a game! (sorry, couldn't resist putting that in there)

What I find most humorous about this is the fact that it is being brought up simply because the zeds are black.  If they were Russian or Japanese, there would be no outrage by anyone.  But because they are black, all of a sudden it is an issue.  Which, when you think about it, makes him a racist himself.

warning, soap box time

That is the thing that makes me so mad about people throwing around the race card like that.  We see it a lot around here with the Native American community as well.  People get so mad any time there is a perceived or real threat of racism that they get paranoid and fail to realize that, by assuming that everyone who might not agree with you on something is obviously a racist, they are becoming racists themselves.  I don't know how many times I have been accused of being racists by natives.  My crime; being white.  As the evil white-man I am the cause of all their troubles and obviously am racist in regards to natives, but if they really knew me they would know the only people I have problems with is true stupid people, especially idiots with closed minds who are incapable of thinking for themselves.  The same is true for anyone, of any race, creed, or orientation.  I am an equal opportunity offender, but only if you deserve it.  And if you think I am a racists for that, take a look inside.  You might be surprised who the true racist is.

Weekly Challenges Are No More

It is the end of an era, but also something I've been thinking about for the last couple of weeks.  With my current work schedule (and if all goes well my long term work schedule) I don't have a huge amount of time for gamming, and when I do I don't always want to play the games on the challenge list.  When I play something not on the list I usually feel a little bad, like I should be playing them, which doesn't help any either.

Long story short, gaming has become a little less fun for me because of the weekly challenges.  Like I said, I feel bad when I don't play the games on the list, I feel bad when I don't get the challenges done, and in general that feeling is hurting my gaming time.

So I am taking a cue from the site that inspired me to do this is the first place.  I am eliminating set challenges.  I may bring them back eventually, but for now they are gone.  The long term challenges will remain, and I might change the weekly challenges section of the side bar to a short term challenge section.  The Now Playing section will remain as well, as the games I am currently playing and the Free Time section will probably list the games that I play when I just want to pick up a controller and have some fun with out getting into a game too much, whether because of time , energy, ect.  I will continue to post on here as well.  Any time I do something that is post worthy, I will write about it.

In this way I should be able to do much better on here.  With out the shackles of a set list of challenges each week, I am free to play what I want.  This freedom is the reason I have over 500 games and have only beaten 20, but having an incentive, and a place to record my accomplishments, should help me play more and hopefully increase the number of games I have beaten.

Defeat The Ninth Colossus--Shadow Of The Colossus

Holy Crap was this guy tough. Not because it was harde to kill once I found its weak spot. It was getting to its weak spot that was the hard part!

I knew I needed to use the geysers to defeat it, but that damn thing wouldn't go over them! Finaly got it over one and knocked it on it's back, but I almost got trapped under it when it trolled back over. Finaly I lured it back over a Geyser and managed to get onto it's back. Then I climbed up it's back to it's head and killed it!

Defeat The Eighth Colossus--Shadow Of The Colossus

That was a tough one. Took a while to find it, but once I realised I had to go inside a cave, it wasn't to hard. After that I spent a while dodging its electrical attack and shooting arrows at its legs, causing some but not much damage. Then I happened to shoot two legs while it was on the wall and watched it fall.

i didn't get down to it quick enough to do any damage, but I came up with an idea. by whistling, I could let it know where I was, and then run around to the other side and attack, shooting arrows at it's legs. Once it fell, I dropped to the ground, drew my sword, and attacked. It took a few trips to the ground, but I finally defeated it.

Halfway there

8 down, 8 to go

Defeat The Seventh Colossus--Shadow Of The Colossus

That wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be when I saw that it was a rather serpentine statue and heard that it was near a lake. I made sure to get every white tailed lizard and fruit along the way and dove into the water. it didn't take long for the Colossus to swim towards me and I grabbed onto it's tail, holding on when it dove underwater. Slowly I made my way to it's head, taking out the electrically charged spines on it's back, causing damage. Finally I reached the head and drove my sword into it's week point, killing it.

7 Colossi down, 9 to go.

Weekly Challenges--May 5-May 11, 2008

Didn't do that great last week, but didn't do that bad either. Didn't get the Rainbow 6 or Labyrinth challenges done due to me not being able to find the game card or either copy of Rainbow and work, sleep, friends, and Rae prevented me of not playing more. Not that I'm complaining, just stating the facts.

On the bright side I found one of the copies of Rainbow 6 (it is a later release, so it might have all patches that were released. if so, hope the ammo bug is still in there :) ) and I found Labyrinth, so I can play those. I'm going to keep the Shadows Of The Colossus challenge as well as the Smash Bros challenge.

I'm also adding a new challenge. I've wanted to do a 99 Minute mega match in Smash Bros Brawl for a while now and finally decided to do it. I'll be picking my opponent, my character, and the stage, since I don't want to be stuck on a stage, with a character, against an opponent I can't stand for over an hour and a half. Should be fun to see what happens.

Now on to this weeks goals!

1.) Play 20 matches in Super Smash Bros Brawl.
2.) Defeat 4 Colossi in Shadow Of The Colossus.
3.) Complete 2 missions in Rainbow 6.
4.) Finish Intermediate in Labyrinth.
5.) Play a Mega Match in Super Smash Bros Brawl.
